Hi! My name is Kai.

Hawaii living, vegetarian, marathon training, martial artist, 日本語 learning, P90X, swim, bike, run, motivate and share with others.

I live on the Island of Hawai’i. That’s the one with a few active volcanoes. I am an ovo-lacto vegetarian working on becoming a full plant based eater. I enjoy learning Japanese, practicing mindfulness, and I have a very big soft spot for European (UK) Candy.

I am currently working on a 1/2 marathon training program, and just starting to dabble in the idea of triathlon training. I recently participated in my first biathlon and first 10K. I am a certified personal trainer, and want to help fellow fitness minded individuals. I have come along way in my journey after losing more than 50lbs over the last few years, and I feel that I can help motivate and encourage others who are looking to start their own journey. Let’s be friends.

    Hi Kai,
We leave in Montreal and we will be in Big Island for the race the 23 of september.
We don’t find a lot of reviews about the race 🙁
Could you help me a little ?
I’m used to run half marathons in 2h10, but I never run trails.
Could you tell me if it’s possible to run this half marathon TRAIL like this ? Is it difficult ? does the trail is regular or is there a lot of holes, roots, etc ?
Else I would do the 10km, but it’s the same, I don’t know how is the road …
Thanks for your help if you have time to answer 🙂
    Have a good day,

      Hi Sandra,

This race is probably the toughest 1/2 marathon on the island. I think it’s the only 1/2 trail run also. The race takes you through a mac nut orchard, coffee fields, and up high into the hills above Pahala. Here is a link to my review that shows the elevation change:

This run will challenge you if your usually 1/2 marathon time is 2:10. Last year my fastest 1/2 was 2:30, and my time on this race was 3:10. So, you’ll want to add a bit of extra time. I’ve trained more this year. So, I’m hoping to have a better time. The trail is mostly smooth through mowed grass, but there are some creek crossings and rocky areas. If you feel this is too challenging then I would suggest the 5K or 10K. If you want to just have a fun time then I would say the 5K is fairly challenging 5K, but you’ll be done quickly. I hope this helps.
